Claremont holds a special place in my heart as a shooting location. It has a quality of light and a kind of timeless, tree-canopied beauty that's rare in Southern California. When families ask me about locations that feel sophisticated without feeling stiff, Claremont is almost always my first suggestion.
The Claremont Village
The Village is the obvious starting point and it delivers every time. The boutique storefronts, the wide sidewalks, the mature street trees — it's a warm, editorial backdrop that works for almost any family aesthetic. Early Sunday mornings, before the shops open and the crowds arrive, are particularly magical.
The Claremont Colleges campuses
The consortium of Claremont Colleges collectively create one of the most beautiful walking environments in Southern California. The architecture ranges from Spanish Colonial to mid-century modern, the landscaping is immaculate, and the grounds are open and welcoming. Scripps College in particular has a stunning courtyard with roses and fountain elements that photographs beautifully in soft morning light.
Memorial Park
A classic Claremont location that works beautifully for more traditional family portrait sessions. The mature trees create beautiful dappled shade, the open lawn gives kids room to run, and the overall feel is warm and familiar without being boring.
The secret one — the Padua Hills area
The residential streets and open land around the Padua Hills area in north Claremont back up toward the San Gabriel foothills and offer some surprisingly beautiful terrain. The streets are quiet, the views are lovely, and the light at golden hour has a warmth that's hard to find in more built-up areas. I discovered this location by accident on a hike and immediately knew I wanted to shoot there.
Indian Hill Boulevard corridor
The tree-lined stretch of Indian Hill Boulevard running through the heart of Claremont photographs beautifully in every season. In spring the jacarandas bloom purple. In fall the deciduous trees turn gold. Even in winter the bare branches against a blue sky have a graphic, beautiful quality.
Claremont is one of my most-requested locations and I book up here quickly in spring and fall. Reach out early if you have your heart set on it.
