How Far in Advance Should You Book a Family Photographer in Southern California

This is the question I wish more families would ask before they need the answer urgently. Because the honest truth is: the photographers you most want to work with book up faster than you'd expect.

Fall sessions — book by July

Fall is the most popular season for family photos in Southern California, full stop. The light is warm, the temperatures are comfortable, and everyone wants their photos done before the holidays. My fall calendar starts filling in June and July for the most popular dates — Saturday golden hour slots in October can book 10–12 weeks out.

If you want a specific date or location in fall, July is not too early to reach out.

Holiday mini sessions — book when announced

I release holiday mini session dates in late summer — typically August or early September. These are shorter, more affordable sessions designed specifically for holiday card photos, and they sell out within days of announcement. The best way to guarantee a spot is to be on the newsletter list so you hear about them first.

Spring sessions — book 4–6 weeks out

Spring is my second busiest season. The wildflowers, the cooler temperatures, and the beautiful green landscapes make March through May a wonderful time for outdoor family photos in the Inland Empire.

Summer sessions — book 2–3 weeks out

Summer is slower for outdoor sessions because of the heat, but early morning and late evening sessions are genuinely beautiful in summer. Golden hour in July and August doesn't arrive until after 7pm, which means long, warm evenings that are wonderful for family photos.

Last-minute sessions

I keep a small number of slots open for last-minute bookings. If you need photos quickly — a visiting family member, a spontaneous decision, an anniversary you just remembered — reach out directly and I'll do my best to make it work.

The bottom line

If you have a specific vision for your family photos — a particular location, a particular season, a particular kind of light — the earlier you reach out, the better. Even if your ideal date is six months away, a quick conversation now costs nothing and ensures you don't end up scrambling.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do fall sessions book out?

Fall sessions — especially October Saturday golden hour slots — can book 10–12 weeks in advance. July is not too early to reach out for fall availability.

What is a holiday mini session?

Holiday mini sessions are shorter, more affordable sessions designed for holiday card photos. They run 20–30 minutes and include a smaller gallery of images. Dates are announced in late summer.

Can I book a same-week session?

Sometimes — I keep a small number of last-minute slots available. Reach out directly and I'll let you know what's open. Weekday sessions are more likely to be available on short notice.

What is the best month for family photos in Southern California?

October is consistently the most popular month — the light is warm, temperatures are comfortable, and the landscapes are beautiful. November is a close second and often easier to book.

How do I hold a date?

A 50% deposit and signed contract hold your date. I don't hold dates without a deposit as my calendar fills quickly, especially in fall.
