How to Prepare for Fall Family Photos in the Inland Empire

Fall is the most-requested season for family portraits, and for good reason. The light is golden, the air is crisp, and the colors are finally cooperating. But it's also the busiest time of year for photographers — which means preparation makes the difference between a session that flows and one that feels rushed.

Here's everything you need to know before your fall family session in the Inland Empire.

Book Early — Fall Fills Fast

In the Inland Empire, fall sessions typically run from mid-September through late November. Golden hour falls earlier in the day as the season progresses, which means more flexible scheduling for families with young kids. That said, fall is the most competitive time to book a photographer. If you're thinking about holiday cards, aim to have your gallery in hand by early November — which means booking your session no later than mid-October. Spots fill weeks in advance.

Choose Your Outfits First

Outfit planning is the single biggest thing families procrastinate on — and the single biggest thing that affects how your photos look. Start here, at least two weeks before your session.

What works for fall: warm, earthy tones — rust, terracotta, olive, cream, camel, burgundy, mustard. Layers — denim jackets, cardigans, flannel, scarves. Textures — knit, corduroy, linen, suede. Coordinated, not matching — everyone should feel connected without looking like a uniform.

What to avoid: bright neon colors or stark white, busy patterns and large logos, clothes that don't fit well, and outfits nobody feels comfortable in.

When in doubt, send your photographer a photo of your options before the session. A good photographer will give you honest feedback — that's part of the service.

Pick the Right Location

The Inland Empire has some stunning fall settings that most families don't know about. Etiwanda Preserve offers golden hills, wide open spaces, and stunning sunset light — best in October and early November when the grasses turn amber. Claremont Village has tree-lined streets with beautiful fall color, great for a mix of candid and environmental portraits. Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park has lush greenery that holds through fall with beautiful natural light throughout the day. Chino Hills State Park has rolling hills and open trails that turn golden in fall, stunning for wide expansive family portraits with room to roam. And don't overlook your own neighborhood — lifestyle sessions at home capture your family in context, and the fall light hits differently through your own windows.

Talk to your photographer about what vibe you're going for. Location should match your family's personality, not just look pretty on camera.

Prepare Your Kids — This Is the Most Important Part

The number one reason family sessions go sideways is unprepared kids. Here's what actually works. Before the session: tell them it's going to be fun, not formal — "we're going to play outside and take some pictures" lands better than "we're doing family photos." Let them burn off energy beforehand — a tired kid is actually easier to photograph than a bouncy one. Feed them before you leave. Hungry kids are grumpy kids. Don't overhype it — expectations create pressure.

On the day: arrive a few minutes early so they can explore the location and settle in before the camera comes out. Bring a small snack and a comfort item if your child is young or anxious. Trust your photographer to work with their energy — a good photographer will meet kids where they are.

Time Your Session Right

Fall light in Southern California is best in the hour before sunset — what photographers call golden hour. In October that's roughly 5:00–6:30 PM. In November, closer to 4:30–6:00 PM. If you have very young children who get cranky in the evening, a late-morning session can also work beautifully in fall — the light is softer and cooler than summer, and kids are typically at their best before noon.

What to Expect After Your Session

A good photographer will send you a sneak peek — a handful of their favorite images — within 24 hours of your session. Your full gallery of edited images should arrive within two weeks. Plan your holiday card order for shortly after your gallery arrives. Many print companies see delays in November and December, so ordering early means your cards arrive on time.
